Isle of Shoals, an award-winning 501(c)(3) not-for-profit NYC theater company is now entering its 25th season. For this landmark anniversary, our company is opening up our annual Lance Hewett Reading Series to playwrights across the country. The Hewett series, which exclusively features new plays and musicals, creates an opportunity for fresh works to be presented live as a staged reading before an NYC audience with a professional cast and production team.
Who Is Eligible?
Isle of Shoals is committed to producing new artistic works that celebrate the human spirit. This year, our season’s theme is Reinvention in both public and private spheres. Any playwright with a piece that broadly fits into this theme is eligible. Because part of our company mission is to give a voice to new, emerging and under-represented artists, the series is open to submissions from playwrights of any age, gender identity, race and ethnic background at any stage of their artistic careers.
Timelines & Deadlines:
Submissions are now open and available and will close on January 1, 2020. We will make our final selection by early 2020. Production will begin in February and the reading series will run for two weeks, from March 3 thru March 22, 2020.
Where will pieces be performed?
Our reading series will take place at Theatre 54 at Shetler Studios in midtown Manhattan, just two blocks from Times Square.
What kinds of pieces are eligible?
Any scripted piece is eligible! We are seeking full-length plays, one-acts, musicals and everything in between. There is no limit in terms of length, style or content as long as you can draw a connection between your piece and our theme. Though there is no absolute limit on cast size, we prefer casts of 10 or less. All musicals must be accompanied by mp3 recordings of at least half the score and pdfs of the sheet music.
How do I submit my script?
Click on the link below. Please note, there is a $10 application fee, payable through either Paypal or any major credit card.
How will playwrights be involved?
Playwrights may take part in auditions, callbacks and casting (in-person or via Skype), and will meet with Isle of Shoals’ board of directors at least twice during the rehearsal process to help guide and hone the evolution of their piece from script to stage. Each play will receive 3 staged readings Playwrights are encouraged (but not required) to attend all readings of their piece and will be given a total of 6 comps for the run.
How many pieces will be selected?
We will produce no fewer than 2 pieces and no more than 5. Our selections will be determined by the pieces we feel demonstrate excellence in storytelling and mesh most fruitfully with our theme.
What else should I know before submitting?
Although we are accepting submissions from playwrights who do not live in NYC, please note that we are not able to provide travel/lodging for selected playwrights.
