Voyage Through The Isles!
Blue Songs, Gray Songs

 Stand and show your colors!
Let's all go to war!
The Lord will surely bless us!
(I've heard it all before.)

 I trace these gardens o'er and o'er
Meditate on each sweet flower
Thinking of each happy hour
Oh, Johnny is gone for a soldier.

Moments of peace in the midst of war:

We're tenting tonight
on the old camp ground
Give us a song to cheer
Our weary hearts --

A song of home.
And friends we held so dear.

There's a spot that the soldiers all love --
The mess tent's the place that we mean.
And the dish we best like to serve there
Is the old fashioned white army bean.

Sittin' by the roadside on a summer day,
Chattin with my messmates,
Passin' time away.
Lyin' in the shadows underneath the trees
Goodness, how delicious!

Eatin' goober peas!

The home front:

Dearest love, do you remember
When we last did meet?
How you told me that you loved me
Kneeling at your feet
Oft in dreams I see thee lying
On the battle plain,
Lonely, wounded...even dying..
Calling, but in vain

Weeping sad and lonely,
Hopes and dreams how vain.
(Yet praying)
When this cruel war is over
Praying that we meet again.

I can still hear them cheering as I gave the order, “Forward!” the thrill of their joyous voices as they called out, “We’ll follow you, Marse George, we’ll follow you!” On, how faithfully they followed me on -- on -- to their death, and I led them on -- on -- on -- Oh God! Aura Lea, Aura Lea,
Maid of golden hair.
Sunshine comes along with thee
And swallows in the air.

Just before the battle, Mother,
I am thinking now of you.
While upon the field we're watching
With the enemy in view.

Comrades brave around me lying
Filled with thoughts of home and God
For well they know that on the morrow
Some will sleep beneath the sod.

Farewell, Mother, you may never
Press me to your heart again
But oh, you'll not forget me, Mother,
If I'm numbered with the slain.

What will become of me?
Mother...?
